Gimme Shelter

When two devoted Rolling Stones fans approached us to renovate their historic four-story row home in Chicago, we were immediately intrigued by the endless possibilities. While the couple deeply appreciated the home’s architectural history and period details, they were equally eager to push the interiors in a more daring direction — layering bold color, sculptural stone, and richly detailed finishes throughout.

CLASSIC ARCHITECTURE, ROCKER ATTITUDE

Original plaster moldings and the historic staircase were carefully preserved. Layered wall coverings and furnishings introduce a subtle rocker sensibility—bringing edge and energy while respecting the home’s graceful architectural bones.

ORIGINAL DESIGN
INFUSED WITH MODERN ENERGY

From the very beginning, the homeowners christened the living room “The Voodoo Lounge” — a moody retreat for bourbon, vinyl, and several original works by Ronnie Wood. We leaned into the atmosphere, enveloping the room in matte black paint, accenting the plaster coved ceiling in metallic gunmetal, and punctuating the space with a vintage Murano chandelier.

CRAFTSMANSHIP WITH A REBEL STREAK

Working closely with our artisan collaborators, we designed fully custom millwork throughout the home, defined by distinctive door profiles and thoughtful detailing. Underfoot, a sweeping herringbone floor grounds the first level—an elegant intervention that feels as though it has always belonged.

We relocated the powder room from the foyer to the family entrance. A custom stone-and-oak console, dimensional marble backsplash, and textured wallpaper make for a comfortable, stylish space that serves for both everyday use and entertaining.

A KITCHEN FIT FOR A ROCK STAR

Throughout the kitchen, thoughtful craftsmanship elevates every surface. Ebony-stained oak cabinetry, a custom oversized brass hood, and richly veined marble establish the palette, while marble shelving across the original window preserves the morning light. Sculptural brass island legs and bold upholstery add a final note of swagger.

A SUBDUED AND ELEGANT SANCTUARY

The bold energy of the main level gives way upstairs to spaces designed for rest and retreat. Here, the palette softens, creating bedrooms that feel calm, layered, and quietly elegant.

RAW AND REFINED ELEMENTS IN PERFECT SYNERGY

While the bathroom’s palette is restrained, the clients’ love of natural stone and expressive materials creates a throughline to the entertaining spaces below. Calacatta Borghini marble wraps the oversized steam shower and cast-iron tub, while an exposed Waterworks shower system adds a touch of steampunk glamour.

A PRIVATE FLOOR FOR QUIET STUDY AND RETREAT

The top floor was designed as its own suite, including a study, sleeping quarters, and private bath. Layered materials and warm finishes create a sense of comfort, privacy, and warmth.
